Double delight for SportPark construction firm

17 March 2010

Loughborough University’s iconic SportPark building helped construction firm Baggaley scoop an awards double at the Chartered Institute of Building’s Committed to Construction in the East Midlands Awards 2010.

Baggaley walked off with the Committed to Excellence & Quality Award and the Committed to Sustainability Award for its work on SportPark, which incorporated a number of green technologies and modern methods of construction techniques, including ground source heating, natural/passive ventilation and a green roof.

The building is currently achieving a BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) rating of excellent and is working towards accreditation confirmation, which would be a first for any building on campus.

Baggaley Construct Project Manager Mark Greasby, who worked alongside the Loughborough University team including Director of Facilities Management Andrew Burgess and building Project Manager Martin Channell, said: "These awards recognise the fantastic work and achievements of all members of the project team."

Comprising three linked pavilions situated at the west entrance to the University campus, SportPark is already home to several national sport bodies including Volleyball England, the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association, UK Talent and the Youth Sports Trust, with British Swimming and the Amateur Swimming Association, English Federation of Disability Sport and the Institute of Sport and Recreation management all due to take up residence in the coming weeks.

The University aims for SportPark to become a key national hub for sports development and a centre for sharing, innovation and creative working and was highly praised last month by Secretary of State for Media, Culture and Sport Ben Bradshaw in a visit to the site.

Loughborough University Deputy Director of Sport (Operations) Tim Garfield added: “SportPark is still in its early days but the success it has already achieved, in terms of both the organisations that have been attracted here, the recognition of its outstanding construction and the sharing and learning it’s encouraging all show that SportPark is fast becoming a location of choice for national sports bodies.

"My congratulations go to Mark and his team and my colleagues here at Loughborough for collaborating to deliver us a World class building".
